A small lot of coffee I have purchased from Chamarel, arabica beans grown across 12 hectares at 280 metres above sea level.
This is a lower altitude than where Arabica is typically grown, but the volcanic soils, mild climate and expertise of the team on the ground more than make up for it — producing a coffee that is entirely unique to Mauritius. The plantation also grows banana trees, cocoa trees and endemic species alongside the coffee, a practice that protects the soil, supports local biodiversity and adds depth to the flavour of the beans.
Every step of the process is done by hand, following the natural rhythm of the land. The cherries are picked and then fermented and washed in Chamarel, then dried and sorted in Case Noyale. From cherry to cup, the journey takes around four months.
I feel very privileged and proud to be roasting and selling a locally grown coffee.
On the nose - nutty. Clean coffee with a mild acidity, notes of fruit compote, tea-like and surprisingly fruity for a coffee grown at this altitude. Light to medium body.
